El Lago Blanket
$150.00 CAD $220.00 CAD
Handcrafted by the weavers of San Juan La Laguna in Lake Atitlan Guatemala, this timeless, organic piece is truly a work of art and will only get softer and more loved with time. This blanket is dyed with the traditional Mayan Jaspe tie-dye technique using solely natural plant dyes.
The women of the Casa Flor Ixcaco Cooperative craft things the traditional way the whole way through. From de-seeding the organic cotton grown locally, to hand-spinning the cotton into yarn, to dyeing and weaving. The dyeing process for each blanket takes three days, and the textile is then woven on the traditional backstrap loom over five days. Two liensos (textile canvases) are then joined with intricate randas (hand embroidery) to reach the desired width.
The whole process from start to finish takes approximately 15 days to complete. Due to the handcrafted nature, there may be slight variations.
